Tatra lakes

There are about a hundred mountain lakes in the High Tatras. The best known and most visited is Štrbské pleso, whose surroundings are ideal for walks, boating, hiking and Nordic walking. In winter, people come here for cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and ski touring.

The largest and deepest is Veľké Hincovo pleso in Mengusovská dolina, up to 53 m deep. In the same valley you will find Popradské pleso, from where there is a beautiful hike to Skalnaté pleso at an altitude of 1,751 m. The unusually coloured Zelené pleso lies in Dolina Zeleného plesa. As many as five Spiš lakes (Spišské plesá) can be found together around the Téryho chata hut in Malá Studená dolina. Don't count on a swim, though – in summer the water in the lakes reaches no more than 15 – 16 °C.
